What is Olaplex and how does it work?

image.jpg

Olaplex has been one of the biggest hair trends of recent time. We can probably remember when Kim Kardashian made headlines with her apparent overnight hair transformation. Going from what looked like her natural dark colour to a near platinum blonde.

With this unbelievable result, Olaplex was catapulted into the mainstream and into the salons across the globe. What if this magical stuff? Is it only for celebrities with their own private stylists? How can I get my hands on this? Were all questions being asked by women eager to experience the results.

What is Olaplex?

Olaplex is the brainchild of Dean Christal, the founder the product who teamed up with Dr’s Craig Hawker and Eric Pressly. Together they worked to develop a new molecule that works from within the hair strand to strengthen and repair damaged hair where the structure has broken down.

olaplex-no3.jpg

It maximises the strength of the hair by reconnecting broken disulphide sulphur bonds in the hair, which in turn gives hair a thicker look and a healthier and stronger feel. When hair is coloured and subjected to regular heat and chemical treatments, the hair bonds break down. Olaplex allows you to rebuild the strength, integrity and structure of the hair. And best of all, it’s compatible with all hair types!

Who should use it?

Olaplex is perfect for clients who regularly colour or lighten their hair and those with overall damaged hair that has become “fried” and worn out from constant hot tool use. Olaplex is an ideal option for clients wanting to go lighter or want to try colour techniques such as balayage, highlights and dramatic colour tint changes. One of the other reported benefits is it’s ability to allow the processing time to be extended beyond the typical processing time. Without the addition of Olaplex, on a dark to light colour transformation, the lightener would need to be removed much sooner in order to protect the integrity of the hair. Olaplex helps to maintaining the integrity of the hair allowing for longer processing times. This makes it a must have for the time poor client who wants that dramatic change in fewer sittings.

Is it a free pass?

Olaplex, although amazing, is simply one of many tools in a stylist’s arsenal. It is not a miracle fix for severely damaged hair. As with any chemical process, there are limits and conditions where it’s effectiveness may be reduced. If you are considering using Olaplex to go from black to white blonde in one session, you should speak to your stylist first. Olaplex does not mean you can bleach your hair multiple times without destroying the hair.

How does it work?

Olaplex is a three-part treatment, the first two of which have to be carried out in a professional salon. Olaplex is only stoked in professional salons, you can head over to their website to find salon locations who use Olaplex.

It works in three stages;

No 1. Olaplex Bond Multiplier – This can be put on the hair as a standalone treatment, or if you’re getting your colour done, it is mixed with the bleach and put directly onto your hair in the foils.

No 2. Olaplex Bond Perfector – This is then put on the hair once the bleach is rinsed off. The Bond Perfector is left on for approximately 20 minutes to get the most out of its chemical repairing process.

No 3. Olaplex Hair Perfector – This is a take home treatment, which we recommend you use once a week. Apply to damp hair, comb through, and leave in for a minimum of 10 minutes before washing out as normal. You can also maximise the effect of the Hair Perfector and leave in overnight, just as Kim K recommends.

Although Olaplex does not have the ability to completely reverse the damage from continuously chemically processing your hair, it can help mend and improve the overall strength of your hair, giving it more endurance and longevity to the harmful elements we put it through every day.

We use and recommend Olaplex.

Salon professional vs supermarket hair care

loreal-pro-fiber-beograd.jpg

Would you like cheap or The Best? You seldom get both. We are often asked about the difference between supermarket hair care products and salon professional hair care products. We are here to tell you the professional opinion.
We always recommend the salon professional products. And no, it’s not because we are trying to line our pockets, we’d rather you purchase salon professional products from one of our competitors, than see you walk out of Coles with your favourite Supermarket shampoo.
That’s how strongly we feel about this!

And this is why!

L’Oréal and other big players like Schwarzkopf are businesses and they are out to make a profit. So, when they see that Susan likes to box dye her hair at home and buys The supermarket shampoo and conditioner, they see that they are missing out on market share.

The L’Oréal Professional products that we sell in our salon may have the same brand name on the bottle as the ones on the shelf at Coles, but that’s where the similarities end. The salon products are of a much higher quality and concentration than that of the supermarket variety.
To make up for the lack of concentrate, the supermarket varieties are loaded with fillers and other unnecessary chemicals such as silicone, cheap detergents and the harsh solvent ammonium xylene sulfonate (which can cause hair dryness and scalp irritation).

Yet another contributing factor as to why we prefer our clients use salon quality products. And it’s kind of a selfish reason. It makes “our” job much easier when it comes time to colour or lighten your hair. It’s far easier to lighten hair when you don’t need to strip out all of the fillers and cheap silicones from the hair that has been left behind from the supermarket products.

The products we recommend are formulated to assist with salon colours, meaning longevity of colour and more time between visits.

Salon professional products also help to keep your hair’s natural pH level. Many of the supermarket varieties cause your hair pH to transition to an alkaline level, which can weaken the hair resulting in breakage.

So next time you hear us droning on about how you should really use salon professional hair care products, just know that we don’t just love the sound of our own voices, it’s all about the education, quality and health of your hair.

PS. Be careful of Chinese knock-offs of salon professional products sold online. These are very hard to tell apart from the legitimate ones and could contain all sorts of random chemicals.

Before you come to us with a screenshot...

Changing your hair colour whether it be from dark to light or vice versa, can be a daunting experience. You’ve spent weeks, if not months, toying with the idea of what you will look like with that new colour. You’ve developed a mental image of what you might look like and how glamorous you are going to be. How you will be the topic of conversation in your social circle and the envy of most. Until finally you have made the decision. “Yep! Let’s change my hairstyle”.

You’ve seen picture upon picture, in all of the magazines and on your social media feed, of celebrities and insta-famous influencers, with a gorgeous Ombre’ or a to-die-for Balayage’ hairstyle. And now it’s your turn. Because you deserve it, right?

Well not so fast missy. We need to have a little chat. We need to talk about those little white lies you tell us when you’re in our chair. If you don’t tell us now, we’ll soon find out when we begin to colour or lighten your hair. Its about your hair history, and more to the point, your colour history. That and also your expectations with respect to time in salon vs outcome.

Often, we are asked, as you whip out your phone and pull up that screenshot, “can you achieve this look?” and the answer is often a resounding “Yes we sure can.” (with a caveat of, “as long as we do the following, and it may not happen in one sitting”) Although for some reason, you only heard us say “yes”.

So, sometimes you may not walk out after the first visit looking like the photo you have shown us. But we can get you there. You just need to be patient. It’s a process, and a process designed to give you what you want while still attached to your scalp.

Let’s say you want to go from box-dyed-black to Kim Kardashian blonde in one sitting but you don’t want to be carrying your hair out of the salon in a grocery bag. Well it seems like we’re at a bit of an impasse. You see, here at The Lounge & Co. we pride ourselves on putting your needs first, and that includes maintaining the integrity of your hair during and following your visit. For a drastic transformation like the one mentioned above, a lot of work has to be un-done before we can begin with the real task at hand. That being, your gorgeous new hairstyle.

We need to strip the months or years of sin from your hair (the supermarket box dye and cheap shampoos) depending on how naughty you have been and other factors like hair length, hair thickness and hair health, this process can take quite some time (hours). We use and recommend the highest quality L’Oréal professional products and Olaplex to ensure your hair’s integrity is maintained for the entire process. But we can only push the hair as far as it is able to go. This is also dependent on your willingness to use the products recommended. Olaplex helps us to push the hair further through the process. Cutting down on time in the chair while maintaining the integrity of the hair. Without Olaplex, the process takes a little longer and we can’t be as aggressive with the process.

Even with the use of all of the professional products, some transformations can take in excess of 5 hours from start to finish! So, bring your phone charger ;)

With that being said. Throughout the entire process, our priority is you and the health of your hair. We use specifically formulated salon professional products with which we’ve been expertly trained. This all in-turn helps to produce for you, the gorgeous results you are after.

So, before you make the tough decision to change up your hair colour. Just remember, it’s a process and it will take some time. Be prepared that you may have to live with a transitional colour for a short period of time on your journey to your destination hairstyle. But be happy in the fact that when you walk out of our little Bayside boutique salon, your hair will look, feel and be healthy and beautiful.
